Maribeth is a dedicated educator with a lifelong commitment to fostering enriching educational experiences for learners of all ages. Beginning her career at San Diego State and Mesa College, Maribeth honed her expertise in communication, teaching various courses, academic advising, and coaching speech and debate teams.
Throughout her career, Maribeth has made significant contributions to education by teaching and developing curricula for numerous secondary schools, colleges, and universities. To further her teaching expertise, she earned a second Master’s degree in education and spent time teaching, developing curriculum, and providing college and career advising in secondary schools. Her passion for education also led her to spend a decade consulting with the US Marine Corps, where she worked closely with Gunnery Sergeants to train Marines to become recruiters. In this role, she demonstrated her ability to tailor training programs to meet the diverse needs of her students, ensuring they were equipped with the necessary skills for success.
Beyond her work in academia and with the military, Maribeth is also deeply passionate about fitness. During the spring and fall seasons, she dedicates her time to coaching high school cross country and track teams. Through her coaching, she not only instills a love for physical activity but also imparts valuable lessons in discipline, teamwork, and perseverance to her students.
Ryan is an Eleventh Humanities teacher at High Tech High Mesa. Ryan has been an Inclusion Specialist and Humanities teacher in his tenure with the HTH organization. He is a San Diego native who graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor’s in American History. Ryan ran Cross Country and Track at Syracuse University, has coached Cross Country at Cuyamaca Community College, and coached Varsity Men’s soccer at HTHPL. He holds a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction Design from the University of San Diego, and he also graduated with a credential in Special Education and Social Sciences.
Andrew's background is rooted in the UK, where he earned a BA in Physics from Oxford University and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. His professional experience spans industrial research and development, as well as teaching in both high school settings in the UK and the US. Andrew has been a member of the High Tech High community since 2005, teaching Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering, while also taking on various administrative roles. For the past three years, he has been based at the Mesa Campus.
Dr. Brett W. Peterson is the Founding Director of High Tech High Mesa. He served as the Director of High Tech High International for two years and The Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs High Tech High for nine years. Prior to being a Director, Brett taught at HTH for five years. He currently serves as a network ambassador training teachers, administrators, and superintendents to implement progressive education in several states, Israel, India and the U.K. Brett recently cycled off as a Trustee of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s National Board, where he advised the organization about grass roots impacts of policy, marketing, and strategic vision. His belief that teaching and learning go hand in hand, guided him as he pursued a Master’s in History from the University of San Diego and a Master’s in Curriculum Design from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Before coming to San Diego, Brett earned a B.A. in History from the University of Notre Dame (Go, Irish!). He holds a Ph.D. in the history of education from the Claremont Graduate University and SDSU.
Chris began his journey with High Tech High in 2002 as a founding member of the college counseling program, laying the foundation for its impactful initiatives. Before this role, he served as Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of San Diego, where he gained valuable insights into higher education admissions.
Since 2004, Chris has been an application reader for the University of California system, reviewing applications for UC San Diego until 2018 and continuing with UCLA from 2018 onward.
Chris’s influence extends nationally, having shaped admissions policies and platforms as a member of advisory boards for The Common Application, College Board, and Scoir. His contributions have advanced equitable and effective practices in college admissions. His expertise has been featured in prominent publications like Forbes Magazine and highlighted in The College Conversation, a comprehensive resource guide for students and families authored by New York Times Bestseller Jacques Steinberg. Chris earned his Bachelor's in Business Administration and Master of Arts in School Counseling, both from the University of San Diego.
